What asset drift looks like on a rainy Tuesday
Drift is not always a dramatic loss — often it is a shelf mark that still believes in a storeroom you emptied last year.
On a typical desk day the first drift we meet is mundane. A sculpture still coded to Room B after the renovation that turned Room B into a meeting space. A hard-drive folder path that ends in a volume name retired during a laptop refresh. Nothing stolen — just a register that stopped moving when the object did.
Why drift hides
Busy teams update the thing in front of them and postpone the spreadsheet. Loan prep, insurance renewals, and board packs then inherit yesterday’s geography. Drift compounds when two people “fix” the same line in different ways.
How we mark it
On the console we do not rewrite your master. We annotate: observed location, recorded location, evidence, and a severity note (blocks a loan / cosmetic / unresolved). That vocabulary keeps the findings pack useful when you finally sit down to edit.
A small habit that helps
After any storeroom move, export the register the same week — even if you only update twenty lines. Future you will thank present you when the rain is loud on the glass and the courier is already booked.
